The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This large canvas is relined, held adequately under tension and remains stable on its stretcher. The paint layer is covered in an aged layer of varnish, with some restoration visible along the edges of the canvas associated with frame wear. In raking light, some dryness is visible in the varnish, with more prominent craquelure in the centre of the canvas. Ultraviolet examination confirms the above and reveals small isolated dots of restoration to the rocky landscape and village, as well as some overpaint in the flesh tones of the figures, such as the face of the central father figure, as well as some strengthening of the low lights of the shadows. There is a small isolated restoration in the lower left just above the white basket. The artist’s expert draughtsmanship remains highly appreciable, with the painting in a very good overall state of preservation.
